Inspiration
Bobby's Intermission is about a lone teenager, whose only hope of getting accepted into his dream film school is by seeking help from some unexpected new friends at the Vali-Hi Drive-In Theatre. I looked to movies that inspired it (and were referenced within the movie), like Star Wars and American Graffiti. I also referenced elements from the Vali-Hi drive-in theater where the movie takes place, like the movie screen and the marquee sign.
Process
I began by finding reference photos of all of the characters and putting together a photo bash to develop the concept and layout of this poster. I used this as a reference to illustrate the first version of the poster. After I got feedback from the director, I made the changes he requested in a new photo bash (these changes included switching the movie screen to the marquee sign, referencing the pilot scene for the character in the middle, and adding a spaceship). I began illustrating these changes, while making some other adjustments to refine the final poster.
Key Art (Unused)
I also designed key art, in both vertical and horizontal layouts, intended to be used as the thumbnail images on streaming service). I used assets and visual elements from the poster to convey the same message, in a simplified layout that would be more legible and eye-catching when at a smaller scale.
